Boundary Dwellers

Education, education, education

This building has housed the University of Edinburgh's Institute for Applied Language Studies (now rebranded as the 'English Language Teaching Centre') for almost 25 years. When I was at the University, the drama studio was in what is now two floors of classrooms, study labs and storage. When my Uncle Ian was demobbed from the parachute regiment in the 1940s he came here for his initial professional training as an architect. And our family's oldest neighbour from when my parents moved to the city in 1952 spoke warmly of the college as where parents sent their sons and daughters to give them a chance of entry into the middle class professions.

It would be nice to think education would remain the function of the building even if/when the University leaves it.
