Much of tropical and sub-tropical Australia is now home to the wild passion fruit (Passiflora foetida). It is native to the Americas from Texas down into Argentina but is now also found throughout much of Asia.
When green, the plant is poisonous, producing hydrogen cyanide, but the ripe fruit is edible. The fruit grows in a capsule of feathered bracts that secrete enzymes to kill predatory arthropods although it does not appear to absorb the digested products.
Today we moved to a new resort and for the next week we will be staying in a time-share in Caloundra, QLD. I managed a few snaps of wild flowers before we left Ipswich and on arrival, encountered an adult assassin bug sheltering from the heavy rain. I'm sure you will prefer the flower to the nasty bug :-)
