Redwood
A fine old Coast Redwood Sequoia sempervirens near our house was cut down a few weeks ago.
This is the bottom section of the felled trunk, now lying in the woods nearby looking somewhat like a Tunnel Boring Machine.
The colour of the heartwood shows clearly how well the tree deserves its common name.
Some time I intend to count the tree rings to find out the age of the tree when it was felled. It was one of a cluster of giant conifers from the Pacific North West planted around this location back in the Victorian era, several of which still survive (including a massive Lawson Cypress / Port Orford Cedar Chamaecyparis lawsoniana in our own front garden.
