Derelict School

This derelict building used to be Public School Number Four in Riverside, Jacksonville. With the construction of I-95 and I-10, it becames isolated and the school closed its doors in 1960.

The building was designed by Rutledge Holmes, built by Florida Engineering and Construction Company, and completed in 1918 at a cost of $250,000.

It was renamed Annie Lytle Elementary School, after a former long-time teacher and principal.

There was been talk of demolishing the building to construct condiminiums but the outcry from historical preservation societies led to that proposal being quashed and the building was granted historical status in 2000.

And that is about as far as Jacksonville has got with the building. It has simply been left to rot away and will more than likely end up being demolished at some point.

So much for heritage in Jacksonville.

The architectural merit of this building can be seen in this shot.
