Wainwright's boots
Today's the day ...................... to follow in the footsteps
You'll find this cast in Wainwrights Yard in the middle of Kendal. The boots belonged to Alfred Wainwright MBE (1907-1991) the famous fellwalker, guidebook author and illustrator who loved the Lakeland Fells and devoted much of his life to writing about them.
His seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, published between 1955 and 1966 has become the standard reference work to 214 of the fells of the English Lake District. Among his 40-odd other books is the first guide to the Coast to Coast Walk, a 192-mile long-distance footpath devised by Wainwright which people still walk today.
When he died in 1991 his second wife Betty carried his ashes to Innominate Tarn at the top of Haystacks, one of the Lake District peaks ...........
