The Wandering Minstrel

Shanghai Dusk

I've spent the last two days exhausting my legs walking round Shanghai, and I have to say I have quite mixed feelings about the city. It's certainly a lot more modern than Beijing or Xi'an, but it just doesn't feel fit in with what I expected. I'd happily try and understand it more but I've run out of time, and to a certain extent, inclination. Maybe I've just not seen enough of the historic town to put it into context.

Anyway, I was thinking about the ancient elements yesterday. I'm certainly anything but a water person, and it didn't take me long to realise that I am, without a shadow of a doubt, an air person. Shanghai gives people like me the opportunity to get up high - at present the highest point is the top of the Shanghai World Financial Centre (SWFC, which I know one or two of my friends will chuckle at). I went to the top of this building at dusk yesterday, which includes a viewing platform on the 100th floor. The building is the one which looks like it has a handle in it, and the viewing platform is on top. I didn't get a great picture so I took this from pretty much right behind my hotel this evening. I'm sure the moon wasn't there yesterday...
