Castles & Un-Wicked Blues
Hello world, wherever you are... It's just gone 2am here on Friday morning and I've just got in from an evening on the taxis. A cup of tea and my thoughts are my companions, plus a couple of Sky +'d programmes as I unwind with two days off now.
It felt a quiet night, but I guess I should comfort myself with the fact that tonight's target has been (just) achieved.
There's an on-running joke on the rank about 3 people who provide the shortest hires where the meter won't move above the starting value. Two of these people are always around the same time and it's always with much amusement towards the 'unlucky' person to lose their place in the rank to do this hire.
So as everyone chuckled as my brother-in-law got the first one, although I did feel sympathy as I know we wanted to have a good night. Unfortunately, the second person also fell in my direction as fate would have it, although they should never have been in my cab as they steamed past two other people who were rightly ahead of her.
One of my other hires was a very posh country-type elderly gentleman who wished to go to "Dundas", like I knew that was, in South Queensferry. He was quite an abrupt man and was having a phonecall with someone who was supposed to pick him up at the station and didn't.
As I drove along, I searched "Dundas" on my SatNav and found a Dundas Avenue and headed for it. Ultimately, it transpired it was in fact "Dundas Castle" (of course, why didn't I think of it earlier?!?!) and I drove down this long path which lead to this wonderful building - which is the subject of today's photo (hope you like it). It was a very impressive building and one you would never known existed if you had just driven past this path on the main road.
The only other event of note tonight was two young girls who, it turned out to be, were my last hire of the night. They were very slightly (understatement!) inebriated judging by the way one of them just lobbed their takeaway into a nearby bush.
The journey was loud with singing of Cowdenbeath football songs and randomly screaming "potato" (I have no idea why!). As we were going to the town I live too, I had already decided this would now be me for the night but I ensured I got payment before I dropped the first girl off.
The first girl disappeared and it was as I closed the rear doors I noticed the seats were soaking wet and then a bottle of WKD Blue clinked to the floor. I knew the seats were clean and dry before as I had sat in them just before their arrival.
The second girl protested her innocence but it was obvious it was her. I knew from her conversation with her friend that she had no money with her and it just wasn't worth arguing over even though she continued to protest (thou protest too much, my dear!) and say she was a beer drinker.
I made a mental note of what address she lived at as I watched her enter her home in case I couldn't clean the car. There is a £40 soiling charge that they are liable for so I wanted to know I had an address to go back to if my employer's weren't happy.
Thankfully I managed to clean the seats (nice fresh smell) before blasting the hot heaters to try and get it dry for the school contracts in the morning which the taxi will be used for.
So now I can look forward to two days off until Sunday in the knowledge that I am also still on target to reach my weekly total - although Sunday is the day with the biggest target - and the longest shift!
Hey ho... why am I only drinking a cup of tea?!
Night all...
