William Martin

Wooden graveboards were commonly used in poor areas where headstones were unaffordable. They are rather rare now but the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin in Ringmer, East Sussex, has two. One (in memory of Henry Martin, the miller, and his wife Mary) dates from 1798. The image here is arguably even more unusual in that it is a 20th century example in memory of William Martin, builder, who died in 1902 and his wife, Nancy, who died in 1930.

More unusual grave markers another day.
