Making a Proggy Mat

Today, me and the wife went to Woodhorn Colliery Museum. This once bustling pit is now a museum, it is the home to The Ashington Painters (Google them) a photographic exhibition and a wonderful demonstration of Hooky and Proggy mat making.

This picture is of one of the ladies demonstrating how it is done.

Hooky and Proggy mats were made from scraps of material from old clothes, blankets and towels. They are extremely hard wearing and were probably an early form of recycling.
See here.

I got quite a few photos and the rest are in my gallery

I would say that if you are ever up our way go to the museum, it's £3.00 park and entry is free, it's worth it to see the proggy mats being made (but only on a thursday)
