Statues

The Cambodians love their statues. Most towns and even small villages have one often depicting a trade ,craft or custom that that particular area is known for. We live in a small rural town and our local statue is of a farmer, his wife and their oxen. It's a life size statue and children often sit on the backs of the oxen whilst their parents chat or do business deals.A village along the road is known for it's weaving and there is a lovely statue of a woman winding silk around her hands. The statue is stone but the silk is real silk. Traffic directions are often given as turn by this or that statue.Interestingly, the statues are never vandalised or written on.This picture was taken outside the school. Most of the schools here have a statue like this at the gate. As with this one there is usually a stern looking male teacher leading a boy by the hand and on the other side of the gate, an equally stern looking lady teacher hanging on tightly to a girl. The 2 little girls in the picture, as with so many of the children in Cambodia absolutely insisted on being photographed which was wonderful for me as I think they bring the whole thing to life!
