The dog dropped the small roll of paper at Quentin's feet. He at first thought it looked like a tiny diploma, tied as it was with that red ribbon. The dog sat, looked up at Quentin, and began panting. The dog's tongue flicked rapidly, its edges curled upward. Then she (Quentin noted the gender) cocked her head to the right.
They stared at one another. The dog barked.
Quentin reached down and picked up the roll of paper. He slipped the ribbon off and was warmed with a familiar sensation. He noted that too.
He unrolled the heavy paper, and it kept up a tension, a round resistance.
Quentin read the calligraphic lettering. Heavy black ink. Perhaps brushed.
"Wanna have a drink?"
The dog barked.
