Opera
Made an opera cake for my friends. It's a French pastry found in any good patisserie. It has five different components, though, so I don't make it very often.
Replaced the coffee buttercream with almond praline buttercream, which as far as I'm concerned makes it better.
Decided to have the leftover piece that wouldn't fit on the platter by myself long before they show up this afternoon.
Don't tell anyone...
(I posted yesterday's ferris wheel in the moonlight blip late last night, in case you want to see it.)
It's called an opera because the Paris opera house, built in the late 1800's, was a conglomeration of layers of styles. The cake, which was invented around then, is thus a conglomeration of several different layers...buttercream, chocolate ganache, almond biscuit, etc.
