28 Weeks and an East German Car

Here's Cryno holding her babybump and Poppy's Trabi..

I see less and less of these cars.. whenever I do spot one I do my utmost to photograph it.. they are simply 'too cool for school.'

They were the flagship car of East Germany and people were on ten year waiting lists.. There was even a convertible jeep version of the famous P601... it's production run lasted over 30 years..

Trabant's were not made out of cardboard despite rumours that circulated in the West. They were made out of Duroplast, which is a plastic resin which often contained cotton, wool or other fibres. It is very strong and durable as the name suggests. It cannot be further recycled, and burning it produces toxic fumes, so disposing of the bodies of old Trabants became a problem. However, Duroplast's components are edible, and there are stories of pigs and sheep consuming Duroplast. 'Hey Pinky and Perky ate my car !'

A Berlin biotech business claims that it has developed a solution to the Duroplast problem: a bacterium that will eat a Trabant in three weeks and leave only soviet style compost.

The makers of the Trabant went on to find a solution for Duroplast disposal in the 1990s. After removing the glass and engine, the Duroplast was then shredded and encased into cement blocks for pavement construction. Trabants rule, so if you see one.. please, please shoot it..before they all become just another part of the sidewalk
