Abrolhos Islands Day 6
This little fellow came up with a batch of oysters which were heading off to be seeded and to have pearls taken out. He's a Blue Ringed Octopus, so named because when they get angry they display bright blue rings on their bodies. This fellow was pretty cross and the rings show up very clearly. We bought up three on this day. The interesting thing about them is that small as they are - the body is about the size of a small chicken egg - they have a painless bite which inject a venom. If not treated quickly it kills the victim. The first signs of trouble are when the neurotoxin begins to effect the respiratory system. Unless immediate resuscitation is applied the victim may die from asphyxiation. The Blue ringed Octopus is very common.
