....Holding out for a hero.........
Long day today.....out at 7.45, finally back home at 23.10!
But it's been a good day.
Busy at work...... two lessons to teach and a boring task that took me three hours to complete........at one point I thought I'd lost more than two hours worth of work...thank God for the "Undo" button!
After school...Shaun, Sam, Colin and Roy turned up for the theory session for the BOSC/RAS Fishing Club....six very attentive young men as the coaches (including me) went through how to set up a pole, attach a rig, which baits to use, plumb the depth and then a DVD of World Champion Bob Nudd showing how to catch fish. They're ready for their first fishing trip next Tuesday!
Then straight on to coaching...22 turned up this week, we were ready for them, enough bait tubs, poles and seat boxes, plenty of rigs and 8 coaches. Everything was going swimmingly when my eagle ears picked up an "Oh shit" from the far side of the pond. Looking up I could see a young lad stood on a platform and a pole gliding across the water away from him!
I went across to him......" I just put my pole down,....and I had my hand near it and everything....and suddenly it just fell in the water and went out there" he gabbled. ....Translation...I put the pole down on the platform because my arms were getting tired....and it was still baited....and I wasn't really paying attention....and a fish grabbed the bait and set off.....and it pulled the pole in ....and now it's towing it out into the middle of the pond!
A cry went up...."Shaun, get the waders on!"....."Bugger off" came the reply....."Miller, get the waders on and get out for that pole"...."Bloody hell, why me?"...."Because you're the lightest and there's at least a foot of silt on the bottom of this pond, now get going"
And, as the picture shows ....he did!
The fish must have thrown the hook because the pole had stopped moving, so he only had to wade about 30 feet out. There must be a lot more silt on the bottom than we thought though, because the water is only about two feet deep, but as you can see it came up to his chest so there must be about two feet of silt down there.
There was only one hairy moment when he stepped into a hollow and the water came to within 2 inches of the top of the waders! But he got back totally dry, much to the chagrin of the rest of us.
We saw the kids off at the end, then I waited for the S&H, YH and Charlie to turn up...and we drove round to Shaun's so he could take the S&H's car for its MOT tomorrow (it's handy being mates with a mechanic), and then I drove them all home and came back here.
Now what's good for dinner at 11.40 at night?
Das vidanya moy padruga.
Oh and for those of you who thought fishing was a nice quiet passtime, have you seen today's news? During a fishing match one bloke drowned a rival in a dispute of who was fishing in whose swim!!!!!
