Summer solstice
I was lucky enough to go on an archaeology walk today. The aim was to arrive at the wonderful stone circle of Long Meg and her daughters in time for the solstice at 1817. We took a delightful route from Addingham Church and along the River Eden during the afternoon.
By the river are Lacy's Caves. These are a set of 5 chambers that were made in a sandstone cliff overlooking the river. Colonel Lacy in the 18th century had these carved out and apparently used them for dinner parties.
I took this photo in a very dark cave with no windows. The flash brought out the colour of the red sandstone walls and the algae climbing up the base of one wall. I was very struck by the image and decided immediately to blip it, even though I later had good images of two (dusty) millers and of the stone circle.
It's been a super day.
