Penicuik House

My walk to and from the High Pond goes past Penicuik House.

The Penicuik Estate has been owned by the Clerk family since John Clerk bought the land in 1654. In the 1760's this fine house was built and the old family home demolished. The house caught fire in 1899, many of the items of furniture etc. were rescued, and the family moved into the stable block where they still live. Don't feel too sorry for them, it's a very grand stable block with a clock spire and replica Roman temple! I'll blip it one day.

The current Clerk family have begun an ambitious 6 year project to make the old house safe. The crane has been here for at least three years now and I'm looking forward to the day when an attractive blip can be posted without the crane and with the house showing its former glory more clearly.

There's lots more information here if you are interested.
