A Lively Debate

Tonight's debate topic at an anarchist cafe in South Philadelphia was anarcho-syndicalism vs. anarcho-primitivism. These two strains are very far apart and no one present had the idea of reaching common ground or converting anyone to their views. However, I found the discussion far more interesting than I expected it to be. Alexis Buss is seen here defending the union organizing approach to self-empowerment, while Kevin Tucker, an prominent activist and author for green anarchism and primitivism, listens. The small, hot room was overfilled with about fifty very interested people, and for me the highlight of the evening was when Kevin got angry because a harsh reference was made to "eco-terrorism." Because of what is known in the US as the "Green Scare," Kevin has been brought in front of grand juries twice, and some of his comrades are serving very long prison sentences, largely for their beliefs. It was only after his few moments of angry response that I felt that I really understood him. I am very familiar with the syndicalist side, but only sketchily articulate on these primitivist-green matters.

Both speakers and others present comprised the leading North American representatives of their camps as well as the most committed activists. Sonja, at far left, made it perfectly clear to both sides that anarchist four-year-olds shall not be ignored.
