Canoeing at Cowan Lake
Saturday
After a week of unsettled weather and quite a bit of rainfall, today was supposed to be sunny and warm, and we'd decided to spend the day at Cowan Lake State Park, about 35 miles to the northwest. We had visited it once before, but many years ago. We made a slight detour on the way up to deliver a prayer shawl to someone from church. We went for a short hike, then had our picnic lunch overlooking the lake. It is a low-horsepower lake, so popular with sailing boats and canoes and kayaks. so after lunch we took a canoe out for an hour. The lake has several shallow inlets, several of them covered with beds of American Lotus waterlilies, as shown in my blip. We shall have to try and get back in August when they are in bloom - they must be quite a sight! As for the weather, the sun did eventually win through, though not until early afternoon.
When we got back I went out with Laura to get a few things for her apartment at college - principally new bedding. Although she is staying in the same apartment complex, they are under new management, and they are giving them a complete facelift - turning them into 2-person, rather than 4-person apartments, all new kitchen appliances, new flooring, new blinds and new furniture, replacing the old twin size beds with full-size beds - hence the new bedding! Needless to say they are jacking the price up significantly at the same time! Fortunately, however, they had already signed their lease for the year before this went through, so they get them at the old rate, though of course their bills for utilities and cable will now be split two ways instead of four.
