Malaysia travels day 4 - George Town, Penang

After 3 nights in Tanah Rata (probably 1 night too many) it was back on a bus.  This time a 8 o'clock start and a 3+ hour journey to George Town on the island of Penang with a stop at Ipoh's chaotic bus station.

This was the luxury bit of the trip as I'd opted (probably more by accident than design) to stay in a new, boutique (butik) hotel, the Penaga, on Hutton Street (named after Hutton in Berwickshire).  The hotel was lovely with a lap pool and great service and it was good to be back in the heat.

George Town is a UNESCO World heritage site and unlike KL has retained many of the old buildings, even if some are in a poor state of repair. One famous area is the Jetties where Chinese families still live in houses built on jetties over the harbour. I came upon some kind of ceremony going on there involving drum banging and the burning of paper 'money'.  I have no idea what it was and by the time I'd explored the Jetties and walked back it was over and all cleared away.
