In a Tin? British. On a Pizza? Hawaiian!
After Columbus encountered pineapples on the island of Guadeloupe in 1493, in Europe pineapples became symbolic of both welcome, & status.
The most extreme example of this must surely be the wonderful, but utterly bonkers Dunmore Pineapple in Scotland, which has been blipped before but I forget by whom, so I can't provide a link to their spendid picture. (Sorry, if you're reading this!)
Dunmore was too far for me to go in a day, but twelve of these more modest pineapples stand in front of Ham House. (Ham & pineapple, anyone?)
Their message is clear: "Welcome to our home. It's much nicer than yours!"
