The Forgotten Island
1. Up nice and early - for a Saturday - and out to shop for breakfast. It finally feels like summer. My favourite breakfast comes together - coffee and tomato bagels.
2. Once the paper is read we get on our bikes. We cycle to Govan to catch the ferry to the Riverside Museum. On seeing the size of the Ferry we cycle on - two bikes and two adults would have sunk it. Not long though we arrive at the gates of the Forgotten Island. This is an area of wasteland on the riverbank that has been taken over by my friend Karen and the company she runs. Her company promises to create art surprises for under 12s and their families. And they do.
3. Inside the gates we start to wander. We decorate a plant pot, plant a flower in it and dedicate them - one to my dad, the other to Colin's mum - and we leave them on display. We find the beach and the picnic area and plonk ourselves for a while, frozen yoghurt in hand, bright pink brolly shading us from the sun and watch island life unfold.
4. After a while we walk along to see the new Riverside Museum. My photo doesn't really do it justice - it's an astonishing building. Like an illustration from the past about what the future will look like. It's great to walk round it and look up at its shape - such an amazing shape. It baffles and impresses me in equal measure. It's very, very busy though and we only have the quickest of trips through it. Actually visiting it will happen another, less packed day.
5. The Tour de France starts today. I watch the highlights while eating my dinner - beetroot, feta and pear salad, melon and parma ham and caprese. We might not be able to be there this year, but I pretend we are. I'm looking forward to the next three weeks.
