Dun
The little mound in the distance is marked on the map as a "dun" which turned out
to be a hut so tiny you had to crouch in it. The moors are covered in this fleecy
white Cottongrass.
We decided to go for a walk from Tolstadh up towards the north of Lewis. We didn't
get nearly so far as we had intended as there were too many interesting plants and
creatures. It took us 2 hours to cover 2 miles and when my husband got stuck up to his
knees in a peat bog we decided to turn back! We added Guillemot, Black Guillemot,
Twite, Dipper and Iceland Gull to the bird count as well as Dragonflies, two kinds of
Damselfly and two kinds of Sundew in amongst the peat bogs. Mind you it was
probably a good thing we turned back when we did otherwise we might have missed the
Minke Whale disporting itself near to the cliffs.
