Calanais
I had a bit of a hard time choosing a photo of these famous standing stones as they are so
picturesque. There are two other stone circles nearby which, in any other location would be
pretty cool but which sadly pale in comparison to their neighbour. Many other stone circles,
burial chambers and so on are to be found in the area.
It was built around 5000 years ago when the climate was rather different and Lewis had
plenty of trees. The trees have since turned into peat bog, 5 feet of which was cleared
from the stones to make them the spectacular sight they are today.
I have a video camera with a huge zoom, when we went to the other stone circles I set up
the camera to zoom in on Calanais 1 (as it is referred to) and kept catching people round
the back of the stones, cuddling them :-)
I also saw today Whimbrels which are like little Curlews.
