"The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare."
I didn't seem to get much opportunity to search far afield for blippery today, so before meeting my Dad for a pizza, I wound my way down to Baker Street & snapped the plaque on the former SOE headquarters building.
Formed by Churchill & Hugh Dalton, the SOE were responsible for espionage, sabotage & reconnaissance behind enemy lines, & to support resistance in occupied Europe.
Because of the location of their HQ they became known as the "Baker Street Irregulars", after the children in the Sherlock Holmes stories, but agents were trained in locations across the UK.
Also the SOE was one area where women fought in the front line. Best remembered is probably Violette Szabo, who was immortalised in the film "Carve Her Name With Pride", & was one of the inspirations for "Charlotte Gray".
