Things that make me smile

Baby Sunflower

You probably wouldn't guess it, but this is a sunflower plant. And there's a story behind it.

Amy's class are all taking part in a sunflower challenge. Plant a sunflower seed in a yoghurt pot, wait until it had germinated, and then plant it in the garden. Then in August when the sunflower is at it's highest, the children are supposed to measure it and take a picture to see who has grown the tallest sunflower.

Our challenge did not start well. After Amy brought her yoghurt pot home, we waited and waited to see the first sign of germination. After about 3 weeks, I grew suspicious and dug around to see if there was any sign of life. To my surprise there was nothing but compost in the pot. When I spoke to Amy about this she casually told me that perhaps she had forgotten to put a seed in her pot!

So we started again and this time we have had some success as you can see, but boy it's been slow going. It's going out in the garden in the next few days... but I don't hold out any hope of winning the challenge!
