Sycamore Gap on Hadrian's Wall
We live 1.20 hrs north east of here, so it is a favourite place to take visitors. We love walking parts of the Wall, built around 121 ad, visiting the Roman Army Museum and especially the mighty remains of Fort Vindolandia. The Roman Army built 9 consecutive Forts on this site from 80 ad. On top of each other which means the permanent team of on-site archaelogists have a mammoth task in hand! As my next online course will (hopefully) be the Oxford Uni's 'Roman Britain' one I have a special interest in all things Roman. This tree is now known to some as Robin Hood's Tree as the wall was in ?Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves?. The scene where Robin is walking along a wall with a large tree in the background is meant to be on his journey to Nottingham. This is where he saved the young boy from the evil sheriff's men. Though only an American could travel from Dover to Nottingham via Northumberland! The unfortunate effect of this notoriaty is that some visitors now think it is OK to get up on the Wall itself (A grade One Listed Ancient Monument) and run along it. Idiots. Off for the 6 hour journey south to Cirencester tomorrow for a few days including a family wedding.
