South bridge and big sky
South bridge was roughly where the marsh on the north side of the old town and castle was dammed to form the Nor Loch in 1460. It was never very deep but nontheless was used for boating in summer and skating in winter. By 1759 it was so badly polluted it began to affect the health of residents living along side, and it was drained to make Princes Street Gardens.
This was taken from The Mound, close to where I took the black and white picture of the playfair steps, last week.
