Pilot Butte

This is the landmark of Bend, Oregon: Pilot Butte. Pilot Butte is an extinct volcano located on the east side of Bend. It is a cinder cone butte which rises nearly 500 feet (150 m) above the surrounding plains. Bend is one of the very few cities in the United States with volcanoes located within their boundaries. It is the landmark people use when navigating Bend. On the 4th of July, the fireworks are launched from Pilot Butte, which makes them viewable to everyone in the city.

Pilot Butte has a walking trail up to the top, along with a road. It is a lovely place to take pictures--ten or more volcanic mountains can be seen from the top of Pilot Butte on a clear day.

Paulina Peak and all its buttes can be viewed from Pilot Butte--I learned when my children were in 5th grade that Paulina Peak would have been the tallest volcano in the state, but it blew its top, and now has 2 lakes nestled in its crater. Paulina Peak is surrounded by buttes-landmarks of Central Oregon.

My son-in-law told me that the implement blipped yesterday was a manure spreader! The notched wheels helped spread the sunshine around!!
