Aquamarine/Nanna K's Day

Recycling Etc.

Somehow managed to get thru the day without any photos (til tonight) Tai Chi class was a welcome calm refuge. A visit with a good friend (with adult conversation!) was equally enjoyed. And as our condo"s FORC rep (Friends of Recycling and Composting), I went to the city's first training for apartments and condos. Seattle now has an amazing program which includes 3 different bins to put stuff. There's everything that can be recycled (this sort of dull photo shows some of our 9 recycle bins (for 9 townhouses in our building). Then there is the food and yard waste where all yard stuff plus everything one can eat , incl. bones and meat, and paper that has food on it gets turned into amazing compost at a plant in Everett Wa (25 miles away) in 45 days! All the rest of the garbage is a very small collection of what's left. And there is a fine for putting compostables and recycling in the garbage. Of course, learning what goes where AND enforcing it is the problem. When I came home tonight I looked in all the recycle containers and took out some things that didn't belong.(dirty cups, notebooks with metal binders, bagged stuff) I also found a very cool little metal cigar box treasure for my efforts. (it was in the right place...)

Fascinating, yes? :-) I'm curious to know what happens to all this stuff in the UK and New Zealand, Sweden and Sri Lanka!
