A Dan (Dawn) Joke, as Gaeilge
"Is cuimhin liom, uair amhain, a bheith i mo sheasamh, amuigh, i mo reimse glas,
Ach anois, is oth liom a ra, nilim ach scath de mo feirmeoir fein iar.."
( Briain O Maolcathail, 1916-?)
Translation-
"I remember, once, being outstanding in my own (green) field,
but now, alas, I am but a shadow of my farmer self.."
Comment-
O Maolcathail, or "Bald Charlie", as he was known, was a significant, but in his time, under-appreciated poet of the Tick-le-Liathroidi school of bards, bodhran players and consumptive patriot Gayles.
Many of his compatriots struggled under British oppression to find his corpse (like humour) (funny) even after his execution sometime in the generally grim and mirthless 1960's.
He often used agricultural references to highlight the loneliness of the Wicklow sheep farmer, sometimes suggested by (lazy) Post-Colonial academics to be a reference (somewhat oblique) to "The Struggle To The Huddled Masses", when Irish peasants, in their dozens, would rise up terrible early and storm the local church and snuggle together to keep warm and eat Jesus, (The Crown Forces having turned the heating off in Catholic ghettos).
His most famous line later became a rallying cry for single horn farmers across the land- "So, whaddya tink of MY road frontage now, ya ride ya Ja?!?!?!?
