Calgary Bay
Summer Holidays Backblip No.4
I had promised F and H that we would "wild camp" whilst on Mull and Sunday was the opportunity to do this before heading down to Glasgy to pick up C (very excited at the prospect of seeing her by this stage!!!). The aim, therefore, was to head to Calgary bay, on the north coast of Mull, for early afternoon and play/BBQ and camp overnight. Turns out that lots of other folk also find this idea appealing, so what I thought would be a beautiful, remote and serene place was revealed to be anything but!
We did the BBQ and playing bit but I convinced F and H that we should head round the coast and try and find somewhere "wilder" to set up camp for the night. We got as far as Ulva Ferry, without finding anywhere suitable and had given up hope, deciding to head back to Calgary bay. On the return drive, however, we came across a beautiful spot next to the road where water cascaded down a small cliff face. Beside the stream, under some trees was a perfect, tent-sized patch of grass. Half an hour later, the tent was pitched and F and H were gathering wood for a camp fire.
Further downstream, lay a further waterfall and a beautiful, crystal clear plungepool, ideal for a spot of wild swimming. Cue Daddy shrieking like a girl and F gleefully snapping away with the camera! :-/
The fire was hurriedly lit once we had returned to the tent, essentially to ward off the midgeridoos. F eventually sought sanctuary in the tent, peering out through the midge net and H continued to gather wood until, by 10pm, tiredness overcame him. Following teeth-brushing in the stream, they were soon tucked up in bed, again providing me with the opportunity to reflect on how lucky we are to live in close proximity to such beauty, whilst watching the sun set over the loch.
An ace day!
