Some time ago, while looking through Cymru Ddu/Black Wales by Alan Llwyd, I came across this wonderful photo of the marriage between Olive Phillips and Raoul Knight (who I believe was a Canadian stationed in Britain). Putting two & two together, I realised that the little lad on the far left is my best friend's step-dad, Roy. Clues were: Roy is now the double of his father (seen on the step behind the bride, his daughter). And Roy's twin brother, on the far right, is instantly recognisable as he has a pronounced squint.
There is a rich and dramatic story behind this photo of jumping ship, imprisonment, infidelity, and a gun battle but it's not really my story to tell. Suffice to say, this photo speaks volumes about Cardiff's multicultural community - especially the doughty Welsh matriarch on the far left of the picture.
