Robber fly?

I think this may be a kind of Robber Fly - it certainly looks pretty mean.

The garden of the holiday house had lots of bushes and trees where insects could lurk or bask in the sun. Despite lots of searching, I didn't find a praying mantis this year....I'm sure they were out there but tricky to spot.
