Merovingian necropolis

...and to think that last year, I didn't know what a Merovingian was. Now thanks to discussions about his essays with son number one, history undergraduate, I know a bit more about them.

This amazing site contained several thousand of these stone sarcophagi originally. It is still an active graveyard with new burials next door to ancient stone tombs. The lids of many of the sarcophagi have a 3 barred cross on them.

The tombs are scattered around the town and we realised we'd even parked the car on top of one in the village square.
