A Nation of Shopkeepers

Another detour onto the South Bank this morning.

I deliberately chose this set of pictures titled Still Open celebrating the British shopkeeper especially after the events of the last couple of days. I dedicate this blip to all those shopkeepers whose businesses have been affected by the riots.

The riots across the country have been well documented on this website and other social websites. I would recommend you check out Folkiebooknerd and Diplomatic Diva's Delight for excellent accounts of events yesterday.

Back to my Nation of Shopkeepers (a phrase first used by Napoleon) the plaque accompanying the pictures says:

On increasingly homogenized high streets small, family run shops compete with the corporate giants that now dominate. Still Open pays tribute to the traditional London shops that prevail in spite of this fierce competition, and in doing so these places preserve a little piece of the city's history and identity for us all to enjoy.

On a lighter note some of them reminder me of Arkwright ...
