The King's Shilling
Our friend Neil is a keen numismatist & today he added this shilling from the reign of George III, (the "Mad" one), to his collection.
Considering it is 195 years old (Happy Birthday!), it's condition is remarkably good.
1816 was "The Year Without a Summer", after the eruption of Mount Tambora, in Indonesia, the year before. The ash cloud masked the sun, causing unseasonal frosts & widespread food shortages in the Northern Hemisphere.
It was also the year Byron, Shelley & Mary Wollstonecraft told each other stories at the Villa Diodati, in Switzerland, resulting in Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein",
and Indiana became the 19th US State.
