Bandh
Today was our first exprience of a Nepali 'Bandh'. On Wednesday, in our neighbourhood, a twenty year old woman called Rosy Maharjan was murdered by her estranged boyfriend. Her family called a Bandh, which essentially means that the neighbourhood goes on strike. People enter the streets and protest...as such, everyone is expected to stay out of their cars and so they tend not to be able to get to work. One of Paul's school buses drove through the Bandh and they were allowed to pass. The taxi behind them wasn't so fortunate...the driver was hauled out, beaten up and his car burnt. I was home for most of the morning, only hearing shouts, cries and chants...when I walked to the gym later on I saw bricks strewn across the streets and groups of young men riding their mopeds towards the trouble, with policemen trying their best to keep some form of order. It doesn't seem to dissimilar to London.
This afternoon we went to Thamel to get the second of three injections for J.E. Police were on most major street corners...I snuck a snap shot of this policeman as we made our way to the clinic by taxi. We had a wonderful evening post-injections....shopping in the outdoor shops in Thamel, wonderful food at the Yak Restaurant and some rather unusual hot nepali beer! I had too many pictures to blip just one...I'll pop some on my blipfolio!
