Landscape or Portrait?
Gainsborough. Not in in Lincolnshire, in Kew. Literally in Kew.
Maintaining yesterday's theme of artists with local connections, this is St. Anne's Church in Kew, where Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) is buried. Although acclaimed in his lifetime, & the favourite portrait painter of George III , my personal view is that his style hasn't stood the test of time as well as that of Van Gogh's.
The church was built in 1714, but this picture gives a clue to the fact that it was extended in 1770, and 1805.
And then again in 1837, 1851 & 1882.
Oh, and in 1902, 1979 & 1988...
