Tower Hill Memorial
This sculpture by Charles Wheeler is on the Tower Hill Memorial to the men & women of the Merchant Navy who died in both World Wars, & have no known grave.
The Memorial is actually in two parts, one commemorating the 12,000 lost in WWI, & a second situated behind for the 24,000 lost in WWII, including LOH's Great Uncle Jim.
Jim Reid was aboard the "Nairung" when it was torpedoed by U-862 on 18 August 1944, off Northeast Mozambique.
The ship exploded with such force that the U-Boat crew feared they had been hit themselves. U-Boat Commander Heinrich Timm ordered an inspection of the location of the sinking, but no survivors were found.
