Homage to Will
Today the Polar Blast from the Antarctic reached Auckland. I am told there was some snow seen going past the window of the 35th floor office of the lawyer for whom I did a report on Friday, and visited today to sign the affidavit in connection. It was cold in the wind while on my run, but only a little rain and no snow or hail.
This large wooden sculpture is found on the northern edge of Victoria Park. It was created by the US sculptor Fred Loopstra for the 1971 International Sculpture Symposium held to celebrate the Auckland Centennial. This sculpture was sponsored by New Zealand Railways. It references the discs of a disc harrow, drawn by horses during the early years of European settlement in New Zealand.
It is rather ironic that New Zealand Railways was a major employer of labour and other workers in New Zealand in 1971, only to be sold by the Labour Government of 1984 to 1990, and then bought again during the Clarke Government (also Labour) of 1999 to 2008.
