Saint Clement's Church

This 12th century church sits outside Old Romney on the Romney Marsh. It is stunningly beautiful with box pews and a Georgian gallery. The coat of arms dates back to 1800; most churches would have this kind of decoration and the two central panels behind the altar list the ten commandments. The church is built on an artificial mound to keep it above the floodwaters and it is claimed that there is evidence of an eighth century structure, believed to be a chapel, on the site. Film director Derek Jarman is buried in the churchyard - he lived at Prospect Cottage at Dungeness towards the end of his life and the church featured in a 1963 film about Dr Syn, the smuggler hero of a series of books written in the early twentieth century by Russell Thorndike.

There are some more shots in a Flickr set. Visiting here was a nice way to spend part of the day.
