If you have ever travelled through the San Juan Islands, you would immediately recognize Spieden Island which sits just outside Roche Harbor across the channel. This privately 3 mile long island of 556 acres is barren on one side and forested on the other...unlike any other islands in the area. Back in 1969 it was privately purchased and stocked with hundreds of grazing animals and several thousand game birds and renamed "Safari Island". Today you can still see Sitka deer, Asia Fallow deer and Corsica Big Horn sheep.
I thought it was exciting to capture this fishing vessel in front of this rather barren island...the reflections of the golden hillsides are beautiful in the blue water on a clear sunny day...a stunning combination.
