Be Nice...
Some of our best lessons come from the people we least expect. As do some of the best laughs. The last two days have been proof of this.
Firstly, I GOT THE PHOTOJOURNALIST JOB AT THE RADIO STATION!! It wasn't so much an interview yesterday as "we want you to work for us, if you're interested", and I was up until 3am the morning of the non-interview putting together portfolio that was, in the end, unnecessary. But I'm super happy.
Katherine Bath ? Contributing Photojournalist for one of Melbourne's most popular radio stations. I like that title. And it will look good on my resumé down the track, if and when I decide to move on.
One of the funniest, most awkward moments IN MY LIFE happened there. The man I now answer to walks into reception after the secretary called him, and we look at each other. There is a moment of mutual "ohmahgawwwd... it's YOU".
Turns out, I met him at the gig I took photos at, that he noticed and wanted... The ones that got me the job offer... And I was incredibly rude to him.
I'd had a long day, I was tired, I was in a dark venue, and a strange man asks, "ohh, are you a photographer?", while I have a DSLR around my neck, and a lens in each hand. My response was, "no, I'm the f**king tooth fairy", and I promptly turned my back, mouthing "ohmahgawwd" to my friend.
We laughed it off, and within three minutes, I had a job... And I am now known as 'THE Tooth Fairy'.
Telling my coffee guy about it, who is a lovely young man, he said, "see, this is why you should be nice to EVERYONE. You never know who they are, and who they'll end up being in your life... Like your boss". I'm generally forthright, and brutally honest. But I think I'll listen to him.
I've always lived by the saying "be nice to your coffee guy". Being nice to my coffee guy has meant I get some great conversations, random advice, introduced to some excellent music... And lots and lots of marshmallows.
And lots of laughter.
Being a bit of a non-day today, I found the smallest things entertaining. And today's blip is one of the funny things he did. We all know what guys are like, especially guys in their early-ish 20's. This was his idea of a pick-up that he was going to give to a pretty young thing. Though, the original had his number on it, which isn't suitable for blipping... So I got him to write it out again, minus his number... Because, as well as a non-day, it was a non-photo-day. Seriously lacking photo-mojo, which I find rather ironic, given my new job.
The moral of the story: Be nice. To everyone. ESPECIALLY your coffee guy.
But with a new job, some profound advice, and much laughter, I'm feeling much better than I have in a long time.
"Life sometimes seems to get the best of you,
Like everything just brings you down.
Just when you think there's nothing you can do,
A friendly face will bring you around."
