roman wines

So, those friends who we decorated for yesterday were our chauffeurs today. They got us a trip to a vineyard for Christmas, and drive us there so we could both participate.

We went to the Roman Vineyard at Wroxeter, just down the road from the roman villa as featured here, on our anniversary this June. The two-hour session consisted of the vineyard owner telling us a potted history of Wroxeter, of the site including the immediate geography, of English wines, of some of the bureaucracy involved in the UK wine industry, of the soil, of the aspect of the vines, of how the vines are trained over the wires and why, of how the wine is made, of how they also make cider too, and then we had some tastings.

There was so much information we're still mentally sifting it - perhaps having some generous tastings (more like half a glass each time!) didn't help us keep it clear in our minds. Anyway, we bought 6 bottles from the shop, which we're looking forward to quaffing at home over the coming weeks.

If you're in the neighbourhood, do go and visit. You'll have a very good time, I promise!
