Reflections
Down day, today. The Boyfriend's sister-in-law had a bad fall on some stairs yesterday, while nearly 21 weeks pregnant with twins. Nothing could be done for her babies. She's in a lot of physical and emotional pain, and has needed sedation for the last 24 hours so that her body can heal from her relatively superficial, but still painful, injuries... Which can't happen if she's having massive anxiety attacks and nervous breakdowns.
The Not-Quite Brother-In-Law is struggling seeing his wife in so much pain, but he's just glad she's okay. They're young, and they will be able to try again to start a family. He was quite distressed last night though, and turned to me for comfort and support. Mind you, I'd had an allergic reaction, and had been dosed up on antihistamines, so I was feeling less than fantastic. But he may as well be family, and family (should) stick together at times like this.
The Boyfriend is quite upset by this, too. He can't stand seeing his twin struggling, and is just heartbroken when he saw his sister-in-law so battered and bruised, knowing that it's not just her hurt by the fall.
I got a lovely text message from The Not-Quite Brother-In-Law this afternoon, which put a smile on my face:
"You are the strangest woman. But you are also the loveliest, strongest, most caring woman. Thank you for being who you are, and being there in my hour of need. You may not be married to my brother yet, but I am proud to call you family. Proud to have the best sister-in-law a man could ask for."
All this grief got me thinking, and reflecting. I wanted to get a pretty sunset photo, symbolising endings that are followed by beautiful new beginnings. But the sunset wasn't all that pretty this evening. However, in the reflection of my glass door, the colours were beautiful. So I took a photo. And I didn't edit the colours in any way. I decided to have me in the photo, because of the self reflection I've been doing today. And the light and darkness - if I look forward, I will find light. Dwelling on what's going on will only keep myself, and those around me, surrounded by dark.
"Dreamed of a dawning
That opened to everything.
Reaching towards it,
Drifting backwards.
Drawing the curtains
Of the windows inside my head.
Maybe I'm only making mirrors."
