Day Five: Badlands to Crazy Horse
We saw LOTS today! It was very difficult to choose a photo. We saw Mount Rushmore, and then drove through Custer State Park where we saw our first American bison and then had about seventy follow us around throughout the park weaving in and out of cars. Then we went to Wind Cave National Park where this photo was taken. It was nice to be down where it was cool, and dark. I thought this photo was rather interesting...this was a hole in the ceiling that had been lit up. Where does it go? I think about 160 miles have been navigated of this cave, but there is still quite a bit that hasn't been mapped.
After this, we drove over to Crazy Horse National Monument, intended as a tribute to all Native Americans. I actually didn't realize that the sculpture, which is in the side of a mountain, is not finished. There's still quite a bit left to carve but hey, I can't blame them. It's tough work, and they haven't accepted government aid because they didn't want their vision to be changed for the area. This was done by a man and his family, and they have created a museum and educational outreach centered around this sculpture.
