1. I fell into a music crush today. That happens to me every so often. I'm just minding my own business and from nowhere, bam, music is in my head and I can't shake it. More often than not it leads to months of obsessive listening. It started with an advert, as it sometimes does - this one is with Nicole Kidman for watches. I loved the music and within a couple of clicks I found my crush and her name is Simone White. The song is called Bunny in a Bunny Suit and this is a photo of the video. It feels like she has taken my inner thoughts from the last wee while and made a couple of minutes of music. Lovely, lovely music.
2. There was another time, a while ago with another advert with a great song. I sang it all the time and even tried, no doubt a little half heartedly, to find it. I knew it was for a car, but could't remember what car. I found it today, it's called the Beep Beep Song. By Simone White.
3. Years ago there was an advert for Orange - it was before this campaign - they were doing a kind of 'the world in the palm of your hand' thing and each ad I thought was a little work of art. One of them was a dance between two people. I fell in love with the music (Brian Eno) and never forgot the tenderness of those few moments. It was called Harmonious Dance. Five years ago, I noticed it on a biog I was typing up for a programme for a show we were doing; the choreographer of Harmonious Dance was the very amazing Steven Hoggett. What he does for us theatrically has taken my breath away again and again over the past five years. I have told him that many times but I have never told him that he was my secret crush all those years ago.
4. There was a time when my crushes like this came thick and fast - each day seemed filled with new books and films and songs and bands and comedians and poets and art to discover that might change my life, that might sum me up and say everything that I wanted to say. They fired me up, represented me, made me dance like no one was watching.
5. That passes. Sometimes though, every so often something lights you up. Something outside of yourself comes along that sums you up for a moment, says what you needed to say and might even, in a tiny, tiny little way, change your life. Even if it is just dancing in the kitchen while the dinner cooks. Here's to the crush.
