Wormy Heart

We took Poppy to the vet yesterday to get her annual rabies/distemper vaccination. In the examination room was a jar with this heart in it. Since it's floating in some sort of preserving liquid, I assume it's real. I'm not sure, but I think it's a heart that has been infected with heartworms. I took this picture while we were waiting for the vet.

When the vet came in to examine Poppy and give her her shots, I got too preoccupied trying to keep her calm to ask him about this ghastly specimen.
