On Yer Bike !!

One of the annual events that takes place in my part of the world, the Gower Peninsular, is the South Wales Bike Ride (previously known as the Gower Bike Ride). It is in aid of the British Heart Foundation and attracts some 1,000 participants of all ages.

Normally this event is held in July but this year the ride had to be postponed due to a tyre blaze in a factory which had been burning some two weeks prior to the event start date and which was on part of the course. The fire was giving off toxic smoke and the Council made the decision to hold the event later in the year when it would be much safer. Today!!

The event is in its 27th year and the route goes through Swansea and the Gower peninsula with 16 and 29 mile-long courses taking in some of South Wales great views and offers, at times, tough challenges. I have participated in this event four times opting for the 29 mile course and I have found it rewarding on each occasion.

This year sees the introduction of a 50-mile ride which also incorporates Gorseinon and Hendy.

The only other time the event was postponed was in 2007 due to poor weather, but it took place a week later.

Comfort stops are made available along the course and the cyclists can even enjoy bacon butties en route at a very popular stop near Llanrhidian. It is here that the reporters from our local paper, the South Wales Evening Post, gather to snap and interview people for their report.

All in all, it is a super day highlighted (if you are cycling) with crowds of people along the route cheering you on and giving you plenty of encouragement.

Well done to all of todays participants. The weather hasnt been particularly kind but they have braved the elements and I trust lots of money was raised for this good cause.
